Short Film feedback

We received feedback from the audience on what they thought of the short film. We received both negative and positive feedback on what was good and what we could have done to improve it. We were told that the flashback scene was well portrayed and was a creative idea that fitted well with the film as it connoted the character's past well. However, some of the audience said it was hard to grasp what was going on in the film but they did have a general outline.

Editing - Day 10

Today we included the final bits such as the name of the film and a quote we decided to use to reflect the moral of the film. We also watched the final product many times to see if we could make improvements.

Editing - Day 9

We rendered our video and watched back the scenes that we edited so far. We started editing the end of the film today and watched the film come together. We also roughly showed the class what we had done so far and gained feedback to which we acted upon and make slight changes for example, the character's voice wasn't in sync with the sound on the sound recording device.

Editing - Day 8

We focused on the flashback scene again. We felt it was vital to get across clearly to the audience that there was a flashback scene in the film and to make it work we improved some of the editing from the day before. We also added the ‘desaturating’ effect. Overall, editing was successful today.

Editing - Day 7

We decided to look at what we had done so far and re-edited some of the scenes from the previous days. We also edited the scenes of Edward’s second flashback which was slightly tricky as we were in a dilemma of how to create that.  However, we came to a conclusion to use a white screen to create a flashback element.

Editing - Day 6

The bench scene of when the two characters meet is the main scene of the film so it was important that we created a clear view and portrayal of the characters. The editing process of this was difficult because we had to sync the dialogue of what they were saying with the sound recorded on the sound recording device. To avoid it being out of sync, we were unable to create a shot reverse shot element as it would not allow the sound to be parallel to the characters voices. We spent most of our editing time doing this and finally succeeded.

Editing - Day 5

We focused on the scenes of the two characters walking to their intended journeys. These scenes had been taken in natural lighting so we had to be aware of the lighting and exposure of the film as well as any excess background noise.  Most of these shots were long shots which allowed the audience to see where the characters were and get a clearer view of their journeys.

Editing - Day 4

We looked through our film to see what he had done so far. We made a few  minor changes and then added a few more scenes to the film.  These scenes consisted of Edward walking. These scenes allowed the audience to see the progression of the film.

Monday, 18 November 2013

Editing - Day 3

We edited the scenes of Edward getting ready and merged it together with the scenes of Joseph getting ready. We also added non-diegetic sound to the film. The source of the sounds came from YouTube.

Editing - Day 2

Today we edited Joseph’s scenes of him getting ready.  There were various shots we had filmed so we looked through them all before deciding which the best, appropriate shots to use in the film. We cut down some of the scenes to make them less time consuming, for example, when Joseph’s buttoning his shirt. A difficult task of this editing process was getting Joseph’s hand movement of playing the song to be in sync with the background music for the audience. However, after trying to sync them together repetitively, we succeeded.

Friday, 15 November 2013

Editing - Day 1

We focused on the flashback scene of the film. The flashback focused on the events that lead up to Edward leaving his wife and home. To make this seem more dramatic, there was a fast cutting rate. We also cancelled out the sound and instead, added background music to make the scene to  make it seem more intense and so that the audience would focus on Edward’s actions. We then had to ‘desaturate’ the flashback scenes to create a black and white effect. This made the audience aware of the event happening in the past.

Filming Day 2

Filming update

We had a look back at the footage we had created and noticed errors, for example the close up of when the actor throws his wedding ring; the shot was not in focus. Other aspects include the lighting in certain scenes. We were also not content with how some of the scenes turned out, so we decided to reshoot them again.

Changing actors

As Isaac who plays Joseph is unable to play the character due to his busy schedule, we are now going to use a new actor called Jordan and start filming the scenes properly tomorrow.

Friday, 8 November 2013

Directions given to actor 2

Directions given to Actor 1

Before filming Izzy's scenes for the short film, we gave him a sheet to prepare for his role and some directions. This made sure that we didn't waste time on time consuming things.

Joseph – he is always happy and smiling has a bop when he walks. He’s friendly and has a strong accent (stereotypical African)

Outfit – colourful t-shirt/shirt, colourful tie that doesn’t match, black trousers, and black smart shoes do you have these?

Script

Frame 28-36

(Joseph bops down the road and joins Edward on the bench, then turns to him)

Joseph: Eh it’s beautiful weather

(Joseph looks Edward up and down)

Joseph: you must be important man eh

Frame 37-42

(Anna rushes past Edward and Joseph with her skirt rolled up she notices and fixes it, Joseph looks at Anna)

Joseph: You’re beautiful like weather eh

(Joseph looks Anna up and down)

Story- you will start off in one of our kitchens dancing to a afro beats song while taking your toast out of the toaster (you will already be dressed except your tie) you will then put your tie on then tell your mum you're leaving and leave the house as you walk down the road you will be bopping and smiling you then see our other actor on the bench who looks posh and join him while you wait for your bus to arrive. You look him up and down and say your other lines to him. After that you will get on and off a bus and walk to your office where it then be revealed that you are a man of importance as you are a CEO of a charity.

Problems with filming

We decided to film the main bench scene with all three characters for our short film on the 7th of November, however, failed to do so because one of the actors became ill. This conflicted with our filming schedule so instead, we filmed one of the other scenes (Joseph’s opening scene).

Filming Problems

We filmed a scene in which the character is getting ready. However, we are now unable to use this clip as we are changing the actor due to confliction on our timetables.

Recce

Recce

This will be Tashana’s bathroom it will be used for the opening scene of our short film where Anastasia is coming out of the shower and brushing her teeth. This is also where the title of the film will be written on the mirror. The lighting from the window could present an issue, but we are not going to be filming towards the light we will be filming away from it facing the shower. The tripod and camera will be placed next to the toilet so that we could get our shot correct. Our next shot will be an over the shoulder shot, however the camera will have to be handheld to get the actress perfectly in the frame.

This will be Evie-may’s kitchen it will be used for the second shot where Joseph is making his breakfast and dancing before he leaves the house. We will work with natural lighting but if that doesn’t give off the light needed we will use artificial. We will take the shot from three different angles. In the first one the tripod will be placed opposite the kitchen so we could get a full body shot, the second will be the angle in which the picture to show his dancing more closely and the third will be a close up of him putting the toast in the toaster.
This bench is where the most important part of the short film will be. This is where all 3 characters cross paths and judge each other based on stereotypes, it will start with Edward sitting on the bench reading his newspaper and Joseph will join him then Anastasia will walk past. We will shoot in daylight and place the camera directly opposite the bench so that we have a long shot of both characters. We will also experiment with other angles to see which one suits the scene best.
This is the hallway Anastasia will be in when she’s struggling to put on her shoes and realizes she is running late for work. There could be an issue with lighting but we could get around that by not directing the camera at the light for this scene we will use long shots and close ups. The long shot is to show her struggling as she puts her shoes on and the close up is to show the time and her facial expression as she realizes she is running late.
This public toilet is for Edwards opening scene where he is getting ready for what the audience thinks is work. We will use both the natural and artificial light in this scene and it will be shot close up to not give away that it is a public toilet so the audience thinks it is his bathroom at home. We will also have a long shot of him carrying a little suitcase which is our subtle hint that he is homeless.
This area of greenery is for the end scene where we find out Edward is homeless and this is where he has been staying. It’s also where the audience get an insight on how he became homeless as he will have a picture on him which will come alive and show him losing his job and wife. This scene will be shot in natural light and it will consist of close ups and long shots. A close up of the picture and a long shot to show him sitting in the grass, fighting with his wife and getting fired.
